About the music on this CD:

The LUX Impro Marathon, a production initiated by Nico Huijbregts (Het Muziekenhuis Nijmegen) and Bo van de Graaf in order to present their new CDs. Performing some of their compositions with all the 24 musicians seemed to be an attractive challenge and so the idea for an extended I Compani line-up was born. The LUX Impro Marathon stands out as a highly interactive event. The audience participated by choosing musicians or by assigning impro tasks via SMS (track 11). The musicians performing on track 2,3,4,8 and 10 were selected by the audience during the concert. They improvised with only a few written notes and performed without any rehearsal: Impro on Request!

The FREEJAZZ KARAOKE is an improvised piece based upon several assignments, projected onto a silver screen. Sometimes a graphic score, sometimes images with lyrics or instructions for selected musicians, resulting in a mysterious yet vivid unpredictable sound experience.

The remarkable composition Il Duca di Württemberg by Nino Rota was originally written for Fellini’s film Casanova (1976). Its first part is inspired by Strawinsky’s The Rite of Spring, whereas the second part reminds of an Italian Opera.

Throughout the years, I Compani has performed this piece in several arrangements, this time especially arranged for this large ensemble. Boxtel 1975 starts with a recording of one of the first performances of Bo van de Graaf and his impro band Morpheus White Music. The first minutes of this concert (a soprano sax solo) were adapted and performed again for the first time since 1975! In this piece, the influence of the late music of John Coltrane is evident.

Theology is a conducted improvisation by Wouter van Bemmel based on two poems by Gerard Reve.

Bo van de Graaf’s Sun Ra and Sun Ra’s Enlightenment, both cheerful and energetic pieces, are starting point and grand finale of this recording. Of course there is a dessert : The Happy Cooker by alto player Frank Nielander. This piece is a boiling New Orleans style, heavy jazzfood inspired composition. Really good for after dinner with a glass of Whiskey, candle light and sweet company !
