Here's a list of places to see interesting music in and around Amsterdam. We really wish someone had given us a list like this when we moved here....

OT301 Squat with regular Monday night electro-acoustic improv sessions called Kraakgeluiden in de Binnenstad. This is at this moment the most challenging and geeky (in a good way) of the regular Amsterdam improv nights...almost always thought-provoking.
Zaal 100 'Nother squat with regular Tuesday night improv sessions, usually acoustic and with more obvious references to jazz than the OT301 sessions, but still adventurous. Organized in conjunction with Plutones. There's also a nice Wednesday night series or two at this same location....you can have the details of this and the Monday/Tuesday sessions mailed to you if you sign up for the Podium Post list here.
OCCII Yet another squat with excellent, varied programming consisting primarily of punk, indie, rap, and electronica, but they have the occasional improv show.
BIMHuis The jazz mecca. For example, November 2003's program includes Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, Mark Dresser, Hamid Drake, Sam Rivers, Cecil Taylor/Tony Oxley, and more....not to mention all of our local talent...
STEIM Electronics R & D center with occasional concerts and lectures that are almost always worthwhile.
Magpie Not actually a venue but a collective of improvising musicians and dancers who perform in various combinations about once a month or so. Frequent contributors lately include Mary Oliver, Cor Fuhler, Andy Moor, Steve Heather, Yannis Kyriakides and a pile of other fun people (their website is not always the most up-to-date way to find out where they're playing, so Google them just to be sure).
De Engelbewaarder Actually just a good old bruin cafe, but every Sunday they have a very good (if relatively safe) jazz session, usually led by one of our local tenor greats (Sean Bergin, Toby Delius, etc.). The link on the left actually points to a list of Amsterdam "jazz sessions" since De Engelbewaarder doesn't have its own website...we know nothing about the quality of the other sessions listed on that page, so you're on your own there if you're feeling adventurous.
