The title tune, "Joy of a Toy," is a lesser known gem by Ornette Coleman. It is joined by roughly equal helpings of Coleman compositions (including two versions of "Free") and Boeren's pithy Coleman-like melodies, plus a Gershwin tune ("Embraceable You"). The results are totally compelling, as the all-star Dutch quartet (Boeren on cornet, Michael Moore on alto sax and clarinets, Wilbert de Joode on bass, and Han Bennink on drums) travel some scintillating terrain, dancing through melodies that hook and pull. The comparisons to Ornette's classic group are too obvious to ignore, and even the leader's tunes bear an uncanny resemblance to late 50s, early 60s Coleman. Boeren's biting brass and Moore's eclectic clarinets handle the material well, with De Joode's rich bass voice a real pleasure. Bennink adds his usual spice, making this an album to be savored.
